Oil is a deadly pearl. Sun Eaters is a contemporary folk dance about the mythological origins of petrol. It is inspired by petro-magic, petro-horror poetry and the tradition of vengeful dances.

If oil is an immense, collective, anonymous material, it can only be accessed through another similarly collective and anonymous material: folk dance is a perfect device for this purpose. It is alive, unburied, incarnated, and it waves back at us. Oil is a vicious poem hidden in darkness.

Sun Eaters blends dances from Norway, Brittany and West Asia. It is drenched in doom metal, pre-islamic iconography, levantine maqams and Norwegian curse tunes. Sun Eaters twists and betrays what it summons, and rekindles with the cruelty of oil to incarnate its deadly, seductive smile.

About Jassem el Hindi (SA)

Jassem el Hindi (SA) is French Palestinian Lebanese artist and performer based in Norway. He examines the double bind of haunting and hospitality, in the company of death poems and distorted folk art. His work is based on broken dances, broken objects, broken texts, cast in nervousness and necessity.

About Sina Seifee (IR)

Sina Seifee is a visual artist and researcher based in Brussels. Structured around a research-intensive and transversal exploration of performative storytelling and image-making, Seifee’s artistic practice looks at how aesthetic knowledge is shaped. His work has been recognized for its commitment to the social dimensions of imagination at the intersection of techno-media and globalism with an emphasis on the heritage of zoology in West Asia. He has presented internationally at WIELS, Brussels (2020); SAVVY Contemporary, Berlin (2016); Sharjah Art Foundation, UAE (2018); Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2017); Temporary Gallery, Cologne (2019); Hordaland Kunstsenter, Bergen (2019); and Akademie der Künste der Welt, Cologne (2015).
