Afrovibes 2022

On 5 October, the 19th edition of the Afrovibes Festival will start with contemporary dance and theater from West and South Africa. Artistic director Jay Pather and programmer / curator Marjorie Boston have once again created a program that demonstrates the diversity and power of change in the African continent.

With artists Babacar Cissé (Senegal), Nadia Beugré (Ivory Coast), Lulu Mlangeni and Kwanele Finch Thusi (South Africa), Elisabeth Tambwe (Congo/Austria), Merlin Nyakam (Cameroon/France), Syowia Kyambi (Kenya). And of course music with DJs and discussions with the artists. Everything in light of exciting work, theatre, dance, performance and experiments from contemporary Africa.

Artistic director is South African choreographer Jay Pather. Programmer and curator in the Netherlands is Marjorie Boston. Guest curator in 2022 is the Senegalese choreographer Babacar Cissé. 

Theme of Afrovibes 2022: Rupture | Rapture

The delight and pleasure we get from our contact with others. And the division and disruption that can arise between people and cultures. It is the tension between encounter and disruption that is the starting point for the programme. Many contemporary African artists work at the interface of this tension that is tangible and sensible. 

This year the festival focus in the programme is on artists from West Africa and the African diaspora in Europe. It is the proximity and often fierce history between West Africa and Europe that makes this region special and is the starting point for the programme with contemporary dance, theatre, performance, music, fashion and visual art. But also again this year with two current dance performances from South Africa.
