Choreographer Andrea Božić and visual artist Julia Willms present their performance How to Exit a Reality (Attempt 1 of 19) in collaboration with the moon. Known for their imaginative, playful performances and installations, their new work is based on the Metonic score; a cycle where the Moon returns to exactly the same place in the night sky and against the same backdrop of the stars every 19 years.

Especially for the performances at Frascati, they have prepared the exact same night sky in Amsterdam as it was in 1604, the year witch-hunt ended in the Netherlands and the year 2060, the year of the fist human settlement on the moon.

For the performance, Andrea Božić and Julia Willms have collected night-time dreams, memories, scientific models, moon rituals and SF fiction, all relating to the moon, spanning from the distant past to the deep-time future. The two performers take the audience on a journey through these different realities merging them with the architectural space of the theatre, so they all take place at the same time here and now.

How To Exit a Reality (Attempt 1 of 19) is a performance based on the escape room principle: we are looking for an exit but every time we find one, we end up in another reality. The two performers apply dream logic and gameplay to the world, approaching it as an existential virtual game – one that we can navigate, change, shift and play, or attempt to exit its logic. Every exit we take brings us to yet another reality – until even the space here and now becomes yet another fluid fiction.

About the makers

Andrea Božić is a choreographer and artist, based in Amsterdam. Her educational background includes dance, literature, English, film, theatre and media art. In Croatia, she studied modern dance and earned a degree in Comparative Literature and English Language at the University of Zagreb. In the Netherlands, she graduated from the School for New Dance Development and DAS Choreography at the Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam. Her work is in-disciplinary and spans site-responsive performance, audio-visual installation, gameplay scores and film, often in collaboration with the weather and night sky. The work re-organises attention and space, creating paradoxical situations to ask questions about spectatorship, imagination, perception, the politics of gaze, presentation of reality and the organisation and distribution of authorship. All the individual projects are part of larger constellations, both within Andrea's own work and in her collaborations with others.

Julia Willms (DE/NL) is a visual artist. She studied Visual Communications at the Academy of Fine Arts in Maastricht (The Netherlands) and Media Art at the University for Applied Arts in Vienna (Austria). Her work deals with the nature of perception, the very act of viewing itself and the shifting position of the spectator within a given environment. She makes video installations (often site responsive), performances, films, photo collages and paintings, often taking place at the borderlines of spaces and architectural environments.

TILT is an in-disciplinary platform founded in 2009 by choreographer Andrea Božić, visual artist Julia Willms and sound artist Robert Pravda to inspire, support and produce artistic practice and thinking beyond disciplines. TILT is an ongoing collaboration project of three artists who continue their individual practices and at the same time work together in various constellations. TILT has developed a unique interdisciplinary artistic practice with a diverse oeuvre across the fields of performing art, visual art, sound art and other hybrid forms in the Netherlands and internationally. Since 2021, Billy Mullaney is associated artist of TILT.
