Actresses are the ambassadors of womanhood. If that statement holds true, what roles are we then playing? Are we puppets of an industry that benefits from reinforcing stereotypes, or pioneers with the power to break them?

Moderated by Carolien Borgers, Naomi Velissariou, Romana Vrede, Jacqueline Blom and Hanna van Vliet, engage in a conversation about the roles they think, hope, wish, or fear they play in shaping representations of womanhood.

What responsibility do actresses carry when it comes to the representation of women in media and the performing arts? What kinds of pressure do they experience behind the scenes—from streamers, directors, casting directors, and producers? What unwritten rules still govern the representation of femininity? Can we actively change those rules? Can we organize think tanks, colloquia, and political lobbying on a structural basis to bring this issue to the forefront? And how do we ensure these conversations are not dismissed as “complaints about women’s issues,” but recognized as a discourse on human rights?

This evening is an attempt to open up the conversation on women’s representation by giving space to as many actresses as possible to share their experiences around the far-from-superficial theme of their APPEARANCE. Naomi dreams of sparking an iconoclastic wave of female representation—an aesthetic revolution, supported and driven by actresses—so that we can reclaim the right, for ourselves, for each other, and for the women we represent, to look the way we do.

This program leads up to the performance SEXODUS, which will premiere later this spring at O. Festival.

Over Naomi Velissariou

TO BE A WOMAN IS TO BE AN ACTRESS. IT MEANS TO BE LOOKED AT. IT REQUIRES A COSTUME, MAKE-UP AND STUDIED MOVEMENT. WE MERELY DO PROFESSIONALLY WHAT WOMEN ARE DOING ALL OF THE TIME.
