The white heterosexual man is in crisis. History has overtaken him. Some want to throw him to the lions, while others strive to keep him on top at any cost. Layer by layer, this man is eviscerated in the hope of finding an answer to the question: what is his role today? Who has control over how his story will turn out? Himself? The director? The audience? Is this his swansong or will he rise again, phoenixlike, from the ashes?

Inspired by Virginia Woolf’s Orlando and countless academic studies and self-help books on man in crisis, One Man Show is a feminist stand-up or step-down solo by Benjamin Moen and Floor Houwink ten Cate on the emancipation and transformation of the white heterosexual male. Following on from their successful cooperation on the electro-opera Merkel (Nineties Productions & Orkater, 2019), the pair once again join forces on this ‘one man show’.

One Man Show is the second production by Floor Houwink ten Cate (1987) with Frascati Producties. After Het standaard leven van een standaard vrouw (2020), she switches focus from the female to the male. Houwink ten Cate makes urgent productions at the intersection of musical theatre, opera and film, based on personal soul-searching. In her highly visual and physical portraits, she celebrates the awkwardness and the pain of life by reducing huge moral dilemmas to human proportions, and by blowing up marginalised problems to operatic proportions.

"Moen plays various types of men with verve. Houwink ten Cate is able, thanks in part to Moen’s strong, physical performance, to make the heavy light and the light heavy. This makes her treatment of the current – stale – debate on the role of the white male entertaining and refreshing. Which is quite an achievement.'' ★★★★ de Volkskrant

"Director Floor Houwink ten Cate has, with actor Benjamin Moen, crated a theatrical solo on the identity crisis facing the modern man. In a veritable tour-de-force, Moen grapples with what it means to be a man, and to be treated as a man.” ★★★★ NRC

“Benjamin Moen impressively represents the male" Theaterkrant

“A highly original production that sparkles, irritates and impresses thanks to Moen’s extremely impressive solo performance.'' ★★★★ Scenes

The choice of this character and the accompanying ‘female’ theme is a welcome addition to the theatre repertoire.” de Volkskrant over Het standaard leven van een standaard vrouw

“The film images are so strong, the way in which her dying is presented is peerless. Vulnerable, extremely frail and at the same time incredibly powerful.” de Theaterkrant over Het standaard leven van een standaard vrouw

“[…] This delightful opera parody is now followed in all seriousness by the famous Yes-we-can speech; so sober, sincere and untheatrically performed by Benjamin Moen. Simply poignant.” ★★★★ de Volkskrant over Merkel

“The latest feminist wave crashes inescapably across the boards.” the Volkskrant critics in choosing Merkel as one of the top ten productions of 2018/2019.
