Frascati maker Melyn Chow has once again been nominated for the VSCD Mime/Performance Award. Last year, she won the same award for her liberating performance shaking shame. This year, it is becoming god that has impressed the jury.
"It is a personal story, yet it transcends the particular," the jury writes. Melyn grew up in a Christian family in Singapore, where the Taoist temple of her father's family was considered forbidden territory. The impact of that experience is reflected throughout becoming god.
"From the moment you enter, you are swept into a disorienting experience, collectively carried from one state of intoxication to another, in a space that seems so unordered that you cannot simply observe, you immediately become part of it."
The performance explores the unknown and the act of embracing not-knowing. Alongside their praise for Melyn, the jury also commends fellow performers Nazar Rakhmanov, Sjaid Foncé and Lưu Thoại Linh.
"It is remarkable to witness four performers venture into uncharted territory with complete commitment and surrender."
