Woyzeck is an intensely gripping exploration of empathy and imagination. Professional actors and TBS patients stage Georg Büchner’s world-famous play together, about a psychologically and socially vulnerable man who murders his girlfriend.

Woyzeck was left unfinished when Büchner died. The 27 scenes he left behind have always sparked reflection and opened up space for interpretation. In this staging, the story is directed and created live by actors Vincent van der Valk and Marieke Giebels, together with TBS patients from Theater Buiten De Muren—the theatre group of the Van der Hoeven Clinic, one of the oldest forensic psychiatric institutions in the Netherlands.

What goes on in the mind of someone who is losing their grip on life and becoming increasingly violent? What about the people around them, their loved ones? Are we all capable of violence? Would we be able to prevent danger as it approaches? In Woyzeck, they search for the edge of madness, the threshold of violence—not in reality, but in our imagination. They are driven by one central question, crucial for every actor, every TBS patient, and perhaps every audience member: can you become someone else?

This research presentation is part of the production Woyzeck, which will premiere in April 2027.

About Casper Vandeputte

Director Casper Vandeputte created STOM, a performance about being unable to give words to your inner world—about not knowing what is going on inside you. The piece features actors Kirsten Mulder, Sophie Höppener, and Kaspar Schellingerhout, who also provides the (live) music.

In 2023, he created this production at HNTjong, where it won the Silver Cricket for Most Impressive Youth Theatre Production. Previously, Casper made the award-winning youth production Bloedlink (14+) and the theatre hit De Gebroeders Leeuwenhart (8+).
