Vacuüm Night is Studio Vacuüm’s open studio event, bringing artists and audiences together to engage in conversation about art and philosophy. During this four-monthly event, composer/director Mees Vervuurt and philosopher/dramaturg Roel Meijvis share their questions, sources and inspirations. This time: how do we hear space in sound? How are space and sound connected? And can making sound help us listen more deeply and be more present?

Every evening, we invite a maker, thinker or performer who inspires us. This evening, percussionist Mees Siderius joins us, having previously performed in several Studio Vacuüm productions. He plays a single pulse at 333 BPM, pushing his body to its physical limits. In a piece of music that initially seems to emerge solely from the drum kit, a chorus of resonances, echoes and overtones gradually unfolds, making the entire space resonate. We hear sound in the space, but suddenly also the space within the sound.

About the makers

Mees Vervuurt is a composer and director. He graduated from Musician 3.0, with an Honours in Composition from the HKU Utrecht Conservatory. In spring 2024, he also studied at The Alternative Conservatoire in London. Before and after his studies, Mees has worked across the fields of music, performance and music theatre, both nationally and internationally. His work has been presented at venues and festivals including Frascati, Amsterdam Fringe, Gaudeamus, O. Festival and Tête-à-Tête Festival (London). Mees is known for his site-specific work, from water storage basements (VACUÜM, O. Festival 2024) and grain silos to theatre stages.

Roel Meijvis studied philosophy in Tilburg and Amsterdam, where he graduated in Art & Culture and Critique. Roel works as a writer of both fiction and non-fiction, as an editor for Philosophy, Politics & Culture at Filosofie-Tijdschrift, and as a theatre maker. He has published on philosophy, literature and theatre in various media. In theatre, Roel works as a writer and dramaturg. As a philosopher-dramaturg, he is a member and co-founder of Studio Vacuüm.

Mees Siderius is a percussionist, performer and founder of improvisation ensemble BUI. His passion for innovative percussive textures and collaborative energy led him to the art of improvisation and interdisciplinary performance. He also shares his knowledge as a teacher of musical creative processes within the Musician 3.0 programme at the Conservatory in Utrecht.
