In this public conversation, scholars Jana Cattien and Sruti Bala engage with current discussions on the role of art and culture in society. Moderated by researcher and dramaturg Miguel Melgares, they share their perspectives on some of today’s most pressing debates.

Ine states that the easier it has become these days—with all our self-branding and mirror worlds—to shift between worldviews in a split second, the more important art becomes as a weapon. Art operates as a soft weapon. Art is most dangerous when it is ambiguous, layered, and ironic, leaving the complexity of the world intact. That is why art is disruptive to fascist leaders. And it is unapologetic about it.

Sruti critically examines the assumption that art and culture are inherently positive or harmless. She demonstrates how art can also contribute to legitimizing violence and generating public support for it, especially in a time of increasing militarization.
