Kim Karssen
Maker
Kim Karssen (1996) is a theatre maker, comedian, and actress. In her performances, she tackles grand themes in grotesque and playful ways. With a love for language and storytelling, she imaginatively seeks the balance between laughter and tears.
Biography
Kim graduated in 2018 from the Performance program at Maastricht Theatre Academy. During and shortly after her graduation, she worked closely with Florian Myjer on: Bloomsbury, War and Peace (nominated for the BNG Theaterprijs award 2021) Mephisto Park (Frascati Producties, 2019), and Mann Mann Mann (2022). In 2023, she won the Wim Bary Stipendium, a career award for theatre makers under 35.
Since 2022, Kim has been an artist at Frascati, where she created Schrödinger's Dog (2022), Don't Rain on My paREET (2023), and OC/DC (2024), the latter two of which were later combined under the title Double Cheek (2025). We're All Alone in This Together (2024) was nominated for several awards, including the BNG Bank Theatre Prize, VSCD Mime/Performance Prize, Gieskes-Strijbis Prize, and the Piket Art Prizes.
Alongside her work at Frascati Productions, Kim creates youth theatre, including Nietes 4+ (BRONKS & Theater Artemis, 2022) and Kier 5+ in collaboration with Hendrik Kegels (nominated for the BNG Bank Theatre Prize and winner of the Silver Cricket 2023) and Oh oh oh Christmas Tree.
In her absurdist work, Kim explores the boundary between joke and art, between laughter and tears. She delights in going over the top and doesn't shy away from discomfort or vulgarity, making her work simultaneously hilarious and relatable as well as unsettling and disturbing.
