Doke Pauwels

Verbond-maker

Doke Pauwels was trained in the dance program of the Royal Conservatory and studied dramaturgy at the University of Amsterdam and The New School in New York. She has worked as a performer and dramaturg for, among others, Internationaal Theater Amsterdam, Toneelschuur Producties, Dutch National Ballet, Golden Palace, Deutsche Oper Berlin, and has collaborated with makers such as Jessie L’Herminez, Elisa Zuppini, Emke Idema, Sofie Kramer and Peter Leung.

In 2019, she founded the art initiative Antidote, which develops experimental festivals and performance events (such as dance party Warm Bad) in which audiences and artists meet in unexpected ways. In 2021, she made her debut as an independent dance maker with The Hatred of Poetry, described by Het Parool as “an exciting performance,” and in 2024 she won the award for Best Emerging Choreographer and the Dans Magazine Award at AmsterDans with her second piece: If you know what I mean.

This year, Doke is receiving the New Makers Grant from Fonds Podiumkunsten. She is artist-in-residence at Theater Ins Blau and is involved with the Alliance Dans Veilig.
