Language of the Birds (work-in-progress) is an invitation to gather, in which artists Saba Alizadeh, Astrønne, Sher Doruff, Gustavo Ciríaco, Matilde Bassetti, Khaled Abdou, and Reza Mirabi meet at Frascati Theater in Amsterdam to enter into an artistic conversation through an impossible attempt to sense what the language of the birds might be.
As a love letter to Attar of Nishapur’s 12th-century poem منطق الطير (Mantiq ut-Tayr), they follow birdsong, fable, real-life stories of people relearning how to listen to birds within collapsing worlds, and practices of listening for what pulses beneath this overwhelming moment, searching for shared meaning in times of heartbreak, fragmentation, and loss.
“I got lost in myself and could no longer find my way back.
I became a dewdrop drowned at sea,
a shadow falling through this unraveling world.
With the coming of morning, I disappeared.
I do not know where I came from,
or where this grief is carrying me.”
Attar of Nishapur
NOTE: In the lead-up to the premiere of Language of the Birds, Reza is already opening up the process to the public. In this research presentation, makers and audience members can experiment, explore ideas, and exchange reflections together.
