Nastaran Razawi Khorasani invites us to imagine the unimaginable in Heartbeats, a documentary performance about one simple but difficult truth: the fact that we are all mortal. She brings to the stage the story of Dian Sahertian-Boers and her struggle with an incurable disease.

How did Dian see her own mortality while still in the prime of her life? What did she long for? Did she see death as the end or would she live on in another way? Heartbeats is based on the conversations between Dian and Nastaran. This is a performance about how we look at death, and about the taboo that still surrounds it.

Nastaran: “In this life – shaped by ideas of progress and control – there is very little room for the unavoidable end. Is my own fear of dying perhaps a fear of the great Nothing? While looking for answers, I met Dian.”

Together with her creative team – with whom she also made the acclaimed Songs for no one and This is not a dance – Nastaran has created a documentary, physical and visual performance. Dian’s words, the light and the music follow their own heartbeat in a constantly changing space, representing a world beyond death.

  • This performance is spoken in Dutch. There are English surtitels.
