An exhibition and lecture-performance exploring bicultural identity through photography, text and performance.

What is the tideline? It is the mark left by water on the sand, the band of debris the sea leaves behind as it recedes. A territory belonging neither entirely to the land nor entirely to the sea. It is a boundary where our identities blend and collide, allowing for the creation of a new, unique imprint that belongs nowhere.

Along the Tideline is the result of research undertaken by Julie Baumann and Caroline Geiser during their residency at KAB Library in Kyojima, Tokyo, in May 2026. The project takes the form of an exhibition and a lecture-performance that speaks to anyone who has ever felt culturally divided, belonging neither to one place nor the other, or to all places at once.

Julio&Caropi’s practice explores the territory of the “in-between” through a combination of stagecraft, text, analogue photography, and performance. The project invites audiences to explore their own “in-between” states and poetically materialises the complex, invisible space of biculturalism.

The materials produced during the residency include analogue photographs, double-exposure photographs taken in both Switzerland and Japan, sounds and videos recorded in both countries, texts collaboratively written by the two artists as the project unfolded, and a cyanotype created in collaboration with artist Shunya Asami.

  • Exhibition opening hours: 11:00–17:00
  • Lecture-performance: 14:00

About the makers

Julie Baumann (Julio) is a Japanese-Swiss self-taught photographer and nurse. Her poetic sensibility evokes intimate emotional responses through her use of focus, double exposure, and transparency. She approaches light as a living presence with which she negotiates, without seeking to fully control it.

Caroline Geiser (Caropi) is a Swiss-Colombian theatre maker and writer who graduated in theatre directing from the Amsterdam University of the Arts in 2025. She previously studied philosophy and English literature at the University of Neuchâtel in Switzerland. Combining autobiographical material with philosophical reflection and theatrical techniques, she explores and shares forms of knowledge that are both analytical and embodied.
