On 26 February, sex workers will be taking over Frascati’s stage during the first edition of (Sex)work it!. Programme-maker Alejandra Zabala: “Sex workers also have a right to be part of the cultural bubble.”

They seem to be two separate worlds: theatre, and sex work. One high culture, the other taboo. In reality, though, there’s a lot of overlap: like art, sex work challenges the status quo. Sex workers also work in the arts, and artists within the realm of sex work. So: where is the boundary, really, between these two worlds? Is there even one? And who gets to decide?

Programme-maker Alejandra saw an opportunity for Frascati – which after all is located in Amsterdam’s Wallen area, the Red Light District – to visibly bring these worlds together. Alejandra: “I wanted to create this programme because there are not enough connections between sex workers and cultural bodies. And this while the practice of being a sex worker has a lot of similarities with that of makers and performers. As a cultural institution, Frascati is in the heart of the city, right next to the Red Light District. So we just have to make that connection.”

She adds: “Throughout history, performers and sex workers have often joined forces: for example in the Stonewall Riots, during struggles for economic independence in Latin America, and in the worldwide struggle for sexual autonomy. Additionally, I believe it’s important to ask the question: why is someone who works as a sex worker not treated the same as someone who works as a performer in the theatre? Sex workers who are also makers also have a right to be part of the cultural bubble. This is why I created (Seks)work it!.”

With (Seks)work it!, Frascati in collaboration with PIC (Prostitution Information Centre) is seeking to build a platform where sex workers can experiment with new art forms, share experiences and tell their stories in their own ways.

This first edition will include performances, stripteases, cabaret, dialogue and video art. With: Maggie Saunders, Mary Hoochie, Maria 007, Performystica and the short film Behind the Window Vera Rodríguez & Nayra Green. The evening is hosted by Alejandra.
