becoming god - Melyn Chow

Melyn Chow returns to the place she was never allowed to enter in becoming god

Step into the world of becoming god, the new performance by maker and performer Melyn Chow. A search for the divine that begins on forbidden ground: the temple of her father’s family, the place she was never allowed to visit as a child.

Melyn grew up in a Christian family in Singapore. As a child, she was never permitted to enter her father’s family temple in Malaysia. That place was considered “unclean,” “spiritually dangerous” — strictly off-limits. Any gods outside the Christian faith were viewed with suspicion or treated as taboo. becoming god emerged from a deep longing to explore precisely the place she had been kept away from.

For this new performance, Melyn collaborates with composer Lưu Thoại Linh of Animistic Beliefs. Together with Linh and performers Sjaid Foncé and Nazar Rakhmanov, she embarks on a playful, devoted and unpredictable search for a forbidden, mystical other.
