What does it mean to occupy the in-between? In between the gender binary. In between sexualities. In between nationalities. In between homes. In between lovers. What are the limitations of this perceived in-betweennes, and can it be liberating?

These questions form the basis of Roxanne, a music-theater performance-exhibition that takes creative inspiration from the 2001 cult classic film Hedwig and The Angry Inch. Like the character in the film, Roxanne feels limited by their liminal status in the world: living in between identities. Literally bound by ropes and masked in fabric, Roxanne forms their identity around their constraints. Can they undress themselves of the limitations society puts on them, or are they destined to be bound forever?

Through use of a wide range of artistic mediums, from audio-play to mime, Roxanne looks to contextualise the in-between through exhibition. Roxanne acts as our master of ceremonies, as they guide the spectator through the various performances that make us aware of identities that exist next to the heternormative.

About Igor Cugat

Roxanne is the graduation piece of graduating director Igor Cugat. He started studying at the Academie voor Theater en Dans in Amsterdam in 2018. Born in Cordoba, Argentina, young Igor got his inspiration from his composer uncle Xavier Cugat, who encouraged him to follow his dreams. This led to Igor writing and directing his first piece at the tender age of twelve.

Igor Cugat uses his theater making as a way to amplify voices of those who are discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression and sex (intersex). His unconventional performances combine a multitude of disciplines as he builds from a foundation of drawing from unique ideas and processes, as well as experimenting with new techniques.

Themes related to religion and family play a large role in his work, as do depression due to abuse, bullying and negative social development during childhood. Igor tends to portray the sad reality that is ever prevalent for many members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

By making the audience part of the actors' space, Igor always tries to break the fourth wall between the stage and the audience. This makes his projects into an intimate and amusing experience. He works with video projections, abstract and clean scenarios with contrasting colors and strong symbolism, a mix of live music and sound effects. Igor ties all these practices together with wit and melancholy.
