Live meeting with La Isla Bonita: on the body language of power
How do we talk to each other now, in 2019? Performance collective La Isla Bonita get together around the table. In a world of bespoke suits, flip-overs, pet peeves, PowerPoint presentations and expensive bottles of mineral water, five white managers meet in a rented space. So what are we going to do about the world, mankind, the business, this team, the product presentation next week Tuesday? Is man – sorry, humanity – capable of coming up with meaningful solutions around a table? La Isla Bonita discuss dissenting alternatives to a world dominated by guerrilla tactics, manipulation, phallocentrism and mansplaining. A hilarious, harrowing production about power and all its rituals.
The Managers will première at Over Het IJ Festival 2019 and can be seen in theatres around the Netherlands in April, May and June 2020.

La Isla Bonita’s work is highly visual, associative, socially critical but also accessible and cheeky, and has a great sense of humour. The members of the group all graduated in Theatrical Performance at Toneelacademie Maastricht institute of performative arts in 2015 with La Isla Bonita. They then went on to create Dogs of War (Parade, 2016) and La Lucha Libre (2017), a wrestling show that grappled in an infectious way with all kinds of clichés about women, men and sex. In December 2018 they presented Atlantis (directed by Paul van der Laan), in which five hydro-feminist mermaids exposed the (underwater) world using a huge flipper.
The Managers is their latest production and will première in the summer of 2019 at Over het IJ Festival in Amsterdam. In April, May and June 2020 it will go on a tour of the Netherlands.
‘Atlantis is a highly imaginative invitation to fluid thinking and the realisation that everything is connected. [...] There are lots of laughs with the five fully fledged mermaids in Atlantis, and the performers from La Isla Bonita make good use of this. [...] Fluid thinking might sound a little woolly, but La Isla Bonita clearly show that it’s not so far-fetched at all.' Theaterkrant
‘Five-piece female performance collective La Isla Bonita is one of the most interesting contemporary young theatre companies. The pleasant, expressive performers are able to creatively combine physicality and presence with social engagement.' ★★★ de Volkskrant
‘Since their graduation piece of the same title from 2015, the five performers from La Isla Bonita have steadily built up a strong oeuvre in physical theatre with social relevance.’ Het Parool
‘Confusing, versatile, disturbing and witty.’ NRC on La Isla Bonita
‘They are strong, tough and shameless – and totally hilarious' De Volkskrant on La Lucha Libre
‘refreshingly ugly, hard and blunt.' ★★★★ Trouw on La Lucha Libre
